I’ve said many times that I fell in love with Paris, the language barrier not so much. I went to a coffee shop in Montmartre, a district that took me back in time, and had a first hand experience with the infamous French hospitality. Now I must say, this isn’t the case everywhere. I went on a tour of the markets and the host was very sweet and helpful. Anyway, the name of the coffee place was Coquelicot des Abbesses (please don’t ask me to pronounce it) and it is a few meters away from the station.
One thing I’ve noticed about french restaurants is how they maximize their space, where there’s a usual space between tables is non-existent in Paris. Because I didn’t speak a word of french I was forced to do hand gestures all the time and asking for a table at this place was no exception. The lady ended up rolling her eyes at me and I scuttled myself inside in humiliation. After seating myself another lady approached me (and smiled, thank god!) and handed me the menu. It was my second time at the place, the first one I was with a companion, and pretty much knew what I wanted.
What’s interesting about this place is that they serve their coffee in bowls! And any chance I could eat croissants I completely grab with both hands and this was no exception. It has to be said that you can’t visit Paris without trying this pastry, nothing comes close to it in the Philippines. That said, I should also mention that on my first visit to this place I had croque madame and coffee, all tasted good and cheap! You’d probably spend less than EUR10 for coffee and pastry (note to self, take note of prices).
