We first arrived in Rome and from there took the train to Naples (€9). When I was planning out my itinerary i had Naples as my first destination but with what I’ve heard about the city I decided to proceed to Sorrento. The thing is, to get to Sorrento, I still need to take a train (Circumvesuviana) from Naples and each ticket costs about EUR5 (one way). You can’t book it online which shouldn’t be a problem as long as you travel during the day (just a personal preference, I find traveling at night stressful). The Circumvesuviana train is different from Trenitalia, it’s a regional (local) train and not air-conditioned so traveling during the summer months can be hot.
Sorrento is the last stop (the line will also take you to Pompeii if you want to see Mt. Vesuvius) and there are two types of trains to get there, one is faster than the other. And because i didnt know the place I didn’t get to take the faster one (Diretissimo is the name of the direct train, 15 stops versus 35). Either way, as long as you get on the right one, you’ll eventually reach Sorrento.
I stayed in a hostel because, budget, and went around town using my audio guide. Except for that first meal, I was mostly having cheap eats (cheese and crackers from the grocer, panini sandwich). I was only here for almost 2 full days (in reality 3 days and 2 nights accommodation) so I didn’t find any need to wine and dine.
Costs:
Train = €19 (round trip via Circumvesuviana plus Intercity train from Rome to Naples)
Hostel = €58 (stayed at Ulisse Deluxe for 2 nights, slept on a bunk bed which, on my first night, I’ve come to realise is NOT for me)
Food = €35 (breakfast not included in hostel, dinner at Taverna Azzurra for €19 inclusive of €2 cover charge)
Tours = €0 (DIY)
TOTAL = €103 (*Php51 = Php5,253)
xoxo
