Who: I seriously don’t mind travelling by myself which is why going on tours on my own has never been a problem. Siem Reap was no exception, I went on 3 different tours and I was all by myself. Economically speaking I’m pretty sure DIY-ing isn’t the cheapest option but it’s doable.
What: First, to get to the temples you have to buy a pass – there’s 1D, 3D, and 7D; I went with 3D but only used it for 2. There are 2 types of (temple) tours available – the small one and the big one and their main difference is the distance, the latter is farther. You get to the sites by riding a tuk-tuk and though it’s not as enclosed as our trikes, you feel safer (at least if the driver is careful). For USD15 you get to hire a tour guide (and by guide I mean driver), if you go at sunset/sunrise there’s an additional fee. I went for sunrise and I paid USD5 on top of the fee (and USD2 for tip). So the tuk-tuk driver (I refuse to call him a guide) will take you to the spots and will wait for you when you’re finished, there’s no time limit although towards the end I kinda felt like I was spending too much time and was given a 30-45min timeframe. The small tour covers Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, and Banteay Kdei. I started early (around 4am) and went back to the hotel around 3pm. I was hella tired.
