Seville – Plaza de España

“Your wings already exist.
All you have to do is fly.”

When you search for places to see in Seville you’d get Plaza de España in the top 3 list. Built in 1928 for a world’s fair held in this city, it is a plaza located in Parque de María Luisa. Much like in the Philippines where we have the existence of ARMM, Spain is made up of autonomous communities. No, I did not know this before going on my trip LOL! I also didn’t know that Andalusia is one of those communities where Seville and Granada belong.

What can I say about Seville? How about “I wish I was in love and with someone when I went here”? We all know Paris and Venice to be honeymoon destinations so I knew going to these places that it’ll be filled with romantic spots like small alleys, quaint coffee shops and restaurants, secluded spots etc which is why it took me by surprise when I got here because this city had all of those to offer minus the throngs of tourists.

In most tourist destinations aside from walking and driving a car you can sometimes get the most out of the place by taking a  motorcycle and riding a bike. I know how to do it but I’ve only really done it inside a gated community with no cars and buses rushing by, hence I’ve always been afraid to rent a bike to see the sights. But since this is my YOLO year that’s exactly what I did and I do not regret it one bit. It was scary at first especially when you’re crossing major streets and you see bike signs that aren’t familiar to you but eventually you get the hang of it. I didn’t rent it for the entire day, I believe it was only for a 3 hours (maybe less) but as time was running out I remember thinking I wished I rented it for the entire day.

It was a short ride from the bike place to the plaza, I left it outside the gate and locked it in one of those bike stands and from here took it took me about 10 minutes to reach the plaza. Dont we all have a few moments in life where we get so astounded by something that we end up staying still for a few seconds longer, mouths hanging open, and hearts stopping for a millisecond? This has happened to me in Paris at night when I first saw the Eiffel Tower just as I rounded a corner, in Tuscany when I saw endless rows of grapevines, in Batad when we were about to make our descent and I saw a multitude of terraces by the side of the mountain, and the crater in Mt. Pinatubo to name a few. That’s exactly how I felt as I crossed the pathway from the entrance gate and I was greeted by this wide expanse of tiled concrete and I remember standing in the middle doing a complete 360 just trying to absorb everything. In the middle of the plaza was a huge fountain with little kids playing, a small of group of friends walking across, and a couple taking photos, there’s so much to see if you’re into people watching.

I walked towards the building and went up its stairs to see the park from above, at the top floor you can’t go outside the balcony but you still get to have the view. As I went down I saw a band and flamenco dancers performing, I stayed for a while to watch and take pictures, tipping before I left. I would’ve liked to go back during sunset but it was too late (occurs at 930sh pm) and we had to get up early the next day for a bus ride to Granada. Maybe someday I’ll get to see it again, until then I have my photos to remind me.

Straight ahead is the entrance where I came through and where I left my bike. Sometimes I struggle with what lens to bring, I still had my wide angle lens at the time of this trip but decided to leave it behind. A bit of a shame coz it would’ve been nice to have taken a wider shot of this view.
